Realistically, it's nice to play devil's advocate and all, but I think it's safe to assume many people who would contribute on Patreon would do so under the assumption that content development is ongoing. The author example doesn't quite work here because a book isn't the same as guides for a game that is constantly being developed My point is about transparency and honest business, not legality. At the same time, would you have still donated if you knew they were going to use it for that? To use a metaphor, if you decided to donate to a charity whose mission is to support the arts (or anything, the mission isn't important) and they used that money not to support the arts but to buy cars for their employee's personal use would you be fine with that? It was a donation so they are well within their rights to do whatever they want with it. If you choose to donate to someone on patreon you are giving away your claim on that money and there is no contract for the creator to do anything at all.
